attic
This photo is from the first time Bob showed Tom the house. (That's Bob in the photo.) It's much cleaner now.
The attic (no bats)
The attic (no bats yet)
No bats up here, either, even though the window is open
No bats up here, either, even though the window is open and has been for a bit... at the point this photo was taken, we might have seen one bat swooping in and out of the attic. (It was quite surprising to Tom, when he went to sweep the stairs one evening, to notice someone swooping near his head!)

Then one day, Sean went to the attic to get some boxes and discovered some bats nesting/sleeping at the top of the chimney.

These photos were taken near twilight, which is why the bats are slightly active.

Aren't they cute?

Bob tells the following story about bats at Topping Hollow: "There was a woman who lived there who trained them to come when she whistled. She would whistle, and then throw a little piece of white bread into the air for them to ketch. I think she took the white middle out a slice of bread and rolled it up into several loose little balls (small bats have small mouths).
It was very cool to watch them dive and catch it in mid air. I think they thought it was loads of fun; I know everyone who watched them in action did:)

P.S. Their "sonar" is pretty good. That means that contrary to popular belief, they WILL NOT crash into you, unless your actions make it hard for them to avoid you. (usually;..... there are stupid bats, just like people. Babies can also be...well... babyish)
