Torus Knot Trio: Vessel, Bioform, and Comb Jelly

Designer and Artist: Shiying Dong
Materials and Methods: Worsted weight wool yarn and half-hard copper wire, crocheted with mostly single stitches
Year of Creation: 2022

Vessel: This piece shows the Seifert surface of torus knot \(T(8,7)\). The torus part is flattened to look like a thick annulus.

Bioform: Using the same technique as in Vessel, but rotating the waves by \(\pi/4\), while maintaining the same emergent thick annulus topology, one can crochet a piece like this one, where the boundary is no longer one piece, but broken into many unlinked circles. This piece is a Seifert surface of 6 horizontal circles on the outside, and 7 vertical ones inside.

Comb Jelly: Using the same technique as in the Bioform but turning the inside out and experimenting with varying edge lengths, one can make various decorative pieces like this one. As in Bioform the boundary consists of multiple unlinked circles. In this piece we see 9 horizontal circles inside and 7 vertical circles outside.
