Six Itajime Orbifolds

Designer and Artist: Carolyn Yackel
Material and Method: Shibori Dyed Cotton
Year of Creation: 2019

This interactive piece illustrates the result that only seven of the seventeen wallpaper patterns can be instantiated in itajime shibori. (The seventh pattern is difficult to dye in a way that can be adequately perceived and has thus been omitted from this set.) The viewer is invited to treat these handkerchiefs as puzzles, refolding them to determine the original folding and clamping that produced the dye resist pattern. The associated folding is the orbifold of the plane wallpaper pattern.
